HERE’S THE THING ABOUT SMALL DOGS…
As seasons change, so do a dog’s needs. Buying clothes for your dog makes sense–especially during the cold, harsh winter. But, there’s one thing you need to keep in mind.
Thanks to their small bodies, small dogs tend to overheat or get cold faster than medium or large dogs. So, they’ll benefit from wearing sweaters in the winter.
SLENDER DOGS: HERE’S WHAT THEY NEED
Slender dogs have a lower body fat percentage, making them susceptible to developing hypothermia in the winter. Slender breeds include borzois, greyhounds, Salukis, and whippets. Make sure you get your dog a warm jacket or sweater in the winter to keep him warm. The same rule applies to skinny dogs.
HAIRLESS BREEDS AND THEIR BODIES
A dog’s fur regulates his body temperature and protects him from the heat and the cold. Hairless dog breeds don’t have this protective layer and need help from you to maintain homeostasis.
Make sure your dog wears sunscreen when out in the summer for sun protection. You should look for a warm and cozy jacket for the winter.
Dogs with a dense coat such as the St. Bernard and Newfoundland Retriever do well in the cold winter months, but tend to overheat in the summer. If you live in a warm area, you shouldn’t get these dogs.
If you do, make sure that the dog has a high-quality cooling vest to keep him cool during summer.
Puppies don’t do well in extreme temperatures. Like small breeds, they’re easily overwhelmed by the extreme temperatures–especially if they’re under six months in age. Make sure your puppy has a good cooling vest during the hot summer or a well-insulated coat during the winter.
Don’t take your puppy outside if the weather is too harsh.
Dogs look cute in clothes. But, clothes have more than an aesthetic value. They can improve your dog’s quality of life by helping him regulate his body temperature. You can find clothes and pet fashion accessories at our Monipops Shop!
